Mobile Phone Advertising Connects You and Your Customer in a Personal Way

Mobile phone advertising is quickly becoming a key component in large business marketing campaigns. Since billions of people use cell phones every day, and over 12 billion text messages are sent every month in the US, the reasons for are clear.

Harder to understand is how mobile phone advertising can benefit the smaller, more local business owner, when its reach is so vast. The answer lies in the other unique feature of mobile phone advertising, the ability to target customers to very specific demographics.

Let’s say you run an ice cream shop. How about sending via sms advertising coupons for a free cone on each of your customer’s kid’s birthday?

This form of personal contact is perfect for any type of service business. If you run a massage parlor or day spa, consider sending discounts or coupons to your customers on their anniversaries, birthdays or other special occasions.

The possibilities are really endless for staying in touch with your customers when you start to think about using mobile phone advertising as a high tech form of personal contact.

Mobile phone advertising can also become a form of viral marketing by offering in your text message that the offer is good for any other friend or family member that your customer forwards the text message to. A modern version of “I told two friends…and they told two friends…,” the possibilities for your business abound.

Whether you run a storefront or service business, viral mobile phone advertising is a great way to fill in slow gaps throughout your week. Suppose you run a cleaning service and your Tuesdays are typically slow.

Consider sending a text message advertisement offering a discount on a whole house cleaning to anyone who responds within a certain period. Try to make it fun and appealing for your customers to pass on to friends and family. You might find yourself overbooked for next Tuesday!

A small bit of creativity together with a commitment to offering a personal touch through mobile phone advertising will really set you above your competition in your customer’s minds.

Should Twitter Ban All Advertising Except Their Promoted Tweets?

Promoted tweets are Twitter’s latest advertising tactic. Basically, big BIG advertisers pay what are probably big BIG bucks to have commercial tweets appear at the top of a stream of tweets. Now, there is talk about monopolizing such and banning all other advertising (see this article in the LA Times )

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, who wants to see anyone limit the great American dream from any one else, even if it’s Twitter. On the other hand, why not, wouldn’t we all love to be Twitter and call the shots?

I guess ultimately, the little, or even the middle guy wouldn’t get far with advertising on twitter anyway. The concept of text advertising is more economical and better suited using a mobile phone advertising campaign aimed at the small to midsized company. Tweets are seen only by Twitter participants, and it is difficult to target it so your ads are seen by just the right people. So you end up spending big bucks and the benefit is not yet proven.

Mobile phone advertising campaigns are much more easily targeted to exactly who you want to receive the ads (after all they opt in saying they want to hear from you). And, the cost of mobile phone advertising is low as you build your ad list. Can be as low as $10/month.

Yeah, I suppose a promoted tweet would be very effective if your reach is global, such as McDonald’s or Starbucks. For the little guys, probably okay to pass on that one anyway.

Mobile Phone Advertising: High Tech Word of Mouth Marketing

Word of mouth has always been the most popular and effective form of advertising around. Small business marketing 101 states that if a friend tells a friend, the chances of making the sale are much greater than if someone sees an advertisement somewhere.

Today, friends talk to friends over their cell phones even more than they do in person. For this reason, mobile phone advertising is the logical next evolution to word-of-mouth marketing.

As with any new form of advertising, many small business owners struggle to see the benefit of how it can work for their particular business. But when you approach mobile phone advertising from the angle that it is simply another form of word-of-mouth advertising, the possibilities become endless.

Here are some of the bigger benefits of mobile phone advertising to your small business:

1. Huge Reach. You only have to walk down the street to see people either talking or texting on their mobile phones. In the US alone, there are nearly 12 billion text messages a month sent back and forth between cell phone users. Many people carrying a mobile phone have it on and nearby 100% of the time. The benefit to you is that you have nearly instant access to a wide range of your customers and their friends any time you want it.

2. Fresh, innovative market. Very few businesses are using mobile phone advertising as part of their marketing strategy today. This means that you will be perceived as cutting edge when compared to your competition.

3. Viral market. Those folks that text message on a regular basis are used to forwarding information that catches their attention to all their friends. If you can create a marketing campaign designed around word of mouth advertising strategies, the possibilities of your message reaching hundreds or thousands more than your original distribution list are huge.

Top it all off with the fact that mobile phone advertising can be very affordable to small business owners, because plans can typically start out small (as little as $10/month) and grow as your needs increase.

How Creative Entrepreneurs Can Use Mobile Coupons to Grow Their Business

Mobile coupons are the perfect application for mobile phone advertising. After all, coupons are used by consumers when they are out and on the go. Not many people cart a computer and printer everywhere they go, or even scissors and newspaper inserts, just so they can find and print coupons for the businesses they visit. And who plans in advance enough to pull and print those coupons at home first?

Restaurants and other big box retailers are starting to understand the advantages of offering mobile coupons. Chipotle has signed up thousands of loyal customers in the past few weeks alone, all by word of mouth promotion. Grocery stores are even looking for ways to offer mobile coupons for the brands and products their customers use the most.

The reasons to offer mobile coupons are numerous. For example, mobile coupons will help encourage repeat sales, move overstocked inventory, and give customers an incentive to try out a new product. They can increase traffic during typically slower times, and also are a good way to cushion the blow of, and ease customers into, a price increase.

Large retailers don’t have to be the only vendors who can take advantage of mobile coupons. Small to midsized businesses, or those businesses out of the normal retail/food service box can benefit from using mobile coupons as well. It is really just a matter of thinking creatively about what the right opportunities would be to offer mobile coupons to your customers.

Who are your customers? What people are you trying to reach? What are they doing when they would typically purchase from you? How can you make their overall experience better?

Let’s suppose that you run a children’s hair salon. So, your customers are most likely the parents of at least one, and maybe several children. A typical scenario for these parents would be that a haircut for the kids is one of many errands that need to be run for the day. They have probably already spent a lot of money running errands and it would be easy to put off the haircuts for another week. But if they have a mobile coupon handy that offers a discount on haircuts, they will have more incentive to stop in.

The same questions apply whether you sell insurance, run a greeting card store or own the local diner in town. Any business with customers who use mobile phones would benefit from considering situations where their customers might appreciate and use mobile coupons.

Internet marketers would even benefit from mobile coupons, even though their customers typically have computer access. Consider offering a “mobile club”, exclusive to those customers that opt into your mobile list. Their opt in would give them access to specials, discounts or rebates that others would not receive.

Everyone wants to stand out from their competition, and for the creative entrepreneur, mobile coupons can become a great way to do just that.

Mobile Phone Advertising: The New Wave In Small Business Marketing

For most businesses, marketing and advertising cannot be a static affair. It is important to be aware of new advertising opportunities and cutting edge ideas. If you don’t, your competition will, and, rather than just standing still you will find that you are falling behind.

At one point, advertising on the Internet was considered new and adventurous. Now, nearly every business has an Internet presence, if only a website. Banner advertising, pay per click marketing, and social network marketing are becoming norms for most business owners rather than new territory.

Most experts are predicting the next big wave in advertising for small businesses and large alike is in mobile phone advertising. No wonder, when the estimated number of cell phone users worldwide is 4.5 billion, compared to just 1.5 billion Internet users.

Even though industry leaders are convinced that mobile phone advertising will be huge, the speed to market, even for large advertisers has been slower than you would expect. But not surprisingly, the results are amazing for those willing to get their big toes wet and try mobile phone advertising. Fast food chain Chipotle had millions sign up via text message to receive mobile coupons in only a few short weeks, nearly all through word of mouth.

Smaller businesses can stand ahead of their competition by taking advantage of mobile phone advertising campaigns as well. Because most are opt-in in nature, mobile phone advertising is actually an integral part of the overall campaign rather than a stand-alone venture. What this means is that mobile phone advertising is a great way to offer an additional service to your customers, such as discounts delivered to their phone, that your competitors are not.

Conversion rates for mobile phone advertising has been found to be very high, as well. The rate of return if you were to mail out coupons to your customers might be about 1%, compared to 30-40% you could realize via mobile phone advertising.

The cost to small businesses is very low to start as well. Because mobile phone advertising is opt-in, a business owner can start with an inexpensive plan and only increase it as campaigns become more effective.

Developments In The World Of Text Message Marketing

Even as little as two years ago the very idea of Text message marketing was not on the radar of most businesses. Marketing plans were focused on the traditional mediums of print, radio and if you had a big enough budget, advertising on television. However there has been a change in the way business marketing is done and the areas these marketers are now focusing on.

However technology is creeping into these markets and changing the way of doing business.

The growth of new mediums of Bebo, Facebook, Myspace and countless others have proven to organisations that internet marketing can play its part. Many companies are building these media into their general marketing strategies. They are writing on blank sheets as there is little history in this area and the rules are still evolving.

The report also suggests the text channel is seen as untainted by spammers and general junk mail. This is in direct contrast to the more traditional electronic medium of the email system. Because of the cleanness of the text market almost all text messages are opened. The same can not be said for the equivalent email market.

With these changes and growth marketing professionals are brainstorming to see how they can utilise these new opportunities. Older methods will continue to be used but these new developments will be used alongside, ideally in an integrated manner.

Innovation is happening constantly and new methods are being offered and adopted. A trial is currently underway in New Zealand for store vouchers to be sent to new customers who sign up to mailing lists via their mobile phone. The text message is then taken into the store and the discount applied to the purchase made. It is not yet clear if this attempt will be successful. While it is cheap to do, consumer reaction is still being monitored. The evolution of mobile phone technology also means what can be done on a mobile phone is ever expanding.

Many companies use text messaging currently to provide real time information to consumers. Texting them their train will be five minutes late is a valuable practical and accepted usage. Airlines have even started to introduce the use of boarding passes sent to mobile phones and read on scanners as the passenger passes through.

One important factor for the marketing professional is the knowledge most people keep their phones close to them at most times and therefore are ready to be marketed to at the appropriate time. The evolution of text message marketing may be the next natural step, but its usage and acceptance are not yet guaranteed.
